Senior Colonel Yang Yujun, spokesman for China's MND, said on Oct. 27 that the Chinese Defense Ministry firmly opposes U.S. naval destroyer USS Lassen's patrol near the Zhubi Reef of the Nansha Islands in the South China Sea, and has made solemn representations to the U.S. side.
China warned the US to “correct its mistake and not take any dangerous or provocative acts that threaten China’s sovereignty”.
"Military aircrew should refrain from the use of uncivil language or unfriendly physical gestures," says the third amendment to the safety memorandum.
The stipulation shows the degree to which the two sides hope to avoid unintended events, although there's no evidence that insulting behavior has been a factor in any recent encounters.
